The Lightning And Thunder Of Thor Ragnarok

Good day my friends! Well after a week away from you I am back! Back with a fresh new review for you to sink your teeth into. Often when I write these reviews I try and think of some clever little tidbit of wisdom to pass along before I get to my review which usually have to do in some way with the movie I have just seen. This week t was particularly tough to think of something to say here to lead into the actual review. But than again after some careful thought I was wondering what makes a perfect movie for you? Because i know what are the perfect elements that I look for to when I review a movie. For certain we can all agree that a perfect movie has to have a great story that engages us, interests us and even gives us a few lugs here and there. Do we agree on that part? Yes! Really? That’s great! Seems that great minds think alike! The other element would have to be the characters in a movie. Are we drawn into there lives? Do they make us laugh? Are they a larger than life figure  with some great conflict that in some way resonates with us? Do we wish we could be them? Do we compare ourselves to them? Who knows what we want in a character in a great movie but we all can agree on one thing is that they have to be interesting and make us laugh. Do we look for action/adventure, drama, romance, thrills and chills? Hey we are all different, but for me if they can incorporate a great story with anyone of those things I listed previously or a combination of those things than you have a great movie. Finally we can all agree that those performing the role must be believable in bringing this story to life. That’s what I love about the movies and about writing myself, nothing greater than being imbued with the talent and gift of a storyteller. A great story is what we all want but only the ones given the talent to tell them can help feed the craving. This brings us to our movie review! A movie that has kicked some life into the box office to start off the month of November after a slow October by throwing a lightening bolt to get us into the theatre instead of sitting on our asses at home staring at our computer screens or smart phones. The movie I am talking about is the long awaited sequel and final movie in the Thor franchise aptly titled Thor:Ragnarok. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth(The Avengers) as Thor, Tom Hiddleston( I Saw The Light) as Loki, Cate Blanchet(Lord Of The Rings Trilogy) as Hela, Idris Elba(The Dark Tower) as Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum(Jurassic Park) As The Grandmaster, Tess Thompson(Creed) as Valkyrie, Karl Urban(Star Trek) as Skurge, Mark Ruffalo(Spotlight) as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Anthony Hopkins( Red 2) as Odin. So let us take a look at Thor’s latest adventure to see if what the buzz is all about!

After leaving Earth when he and the other Avengers defeated Ultron , Thor has been searching for answers and more knowledge about the Infinity Stones, with no luck in his search he finds nothing but a prison chains for himself. He has become the prisoner of Surtur who Thor thought his father had destroyed but learns that Surtur cannot be destroyed by anyone , the only way he can die is to fulfill the prophecy of fully regaining his strength to destroy Asgard  in bringing about Ragnarok. Thor executes a grand escape and defeats Surtur, taking with him Surturs head to put in Odin’s trophy room. Upon returning to Asgard he finds that Heimdall(Elba) has become wanted for treason and is in hiding, in his place is Skurge(Urban). Also Thor discovers that Loki has faked his death and been impersonating their father Odin who he has hidden away. Upon revealing Loki’s plan Thor demands that Loki show him where their father is. This leads them to New York City where Loki is immediately captured by Dr. Strange and summons Thor and upon finding out why he brought Loki with him agrees to tell him where their father is. Dr.Strange sends Thor and Loki to Norway where Odin is. They learn that Odin is dying and that upon his death Hela the goddess of death and the sister they never knew they had who Odin imprisoned for her lust for more power and the wake of death and destruction she caused trying to get it in order to seize power in Asgard. Odin quickly dies after telling his sons his secret and Hela promptly is released from her prison and is anxious to take the throne as ruler of Asgard. Thor tries to stop her but finds that she is more powerful than imagined even destroying his beloved hammer Mjolnir. Thor and Loki try to escape back to Asgard through the bi-frost but are followed by Hela who throws them out of the bi-frost. Thor ends up on Sakaar a planet that is essentially a dumping ground fro debris that falls through numerous portals and is ruled by The Grandmaster(Goldblum). Thor is captured by a woman who implants him with a stunner device and is brought to The Grandmaster as a new gladiator for the games and opponent for Grandmasters champion. Thor also discovers Loki is there too having arrived two weeks before him. Thor is told that he can win his freedom if he defeats Grandmasters champion and agrees to do so. He learns that the champion has never been defeated by a fellow gladiator named Korg. Before his match Thor’s hair is cut and he learns that the woman who captured him was a Valkyrie one of Asgards greatest warriors who has given up on protecting Asgard after all Valkyries except her were killed trying to stop Hela for Odin. Thor than learns that the Grandmasters champion is his fellow Avenger Hulk aka Bruce Banner . The two battle and eventually they revealing Thor’s ultimate lightening power without his hammer but is stopped by The Grandmaster. Back on Asgard Hela has recruited Skurge to be her executioner and revived her army buried beneath the trophy room and her large wolf Fenrir who died during the war for the 9 realms. Heimdall steals the bi-frost sword preventing Hela from leaving Asgard to fill her need for conquest and also hdes the citizens of Asgard in a secret stronghold in the mountains which causes Hela to search Asgard to find him and the sword. Back on Sakaar Thor learns that Hulk has been there since he went missing on the Quinjetafter defeating Ultron  but has not been Banner since he left Earth. He eventually gets him to change back after seeing video message of Black Widow and banner is in shock of where he is. The two eventually convince Valkyrie to help them return to Asgard to help defeat Hela and escape the planet under the guise of a revolution. So the three “Revengers” as Thor calls them return to Asgard to stop Hela before she kills all the citizens and sets out to try and rule the other realms. With some help from Loki, Korh and other revolutionaries from Sakaar they help evacuate the citizens on a ship but realize that the only way to stop their evil sister is to cut off the source of her power which is Asgard and need to bring about Ragnarok to do it.

Well that sounds like a fantastic movie doesn’t it? I can personally tell you it was! This movie had all the right elements working for it. It had a strong script, great characters and story that kept you glued to your seats. This movie was also not like the other Thor movies adding more humour to it which really payed off big time making this movie twice as fun. Dierctor Taika Waititi gave the movie a fun feeling with a bit of a seventies rock opera type persona. Chris Hemsworth and all the cast involved played perfectly in this new direction that the movie took. I personally loved Hemsworths sense of humour it provided the audience with tons of laughs as did Jeff Goldblum whose character played to the cooky kind of persona he has. This movie was not short on action either giving the great action scenes we yearn for in a Marvel movie. This movie really has nothing bad about it and was a joy to watch. It truly delivered big time and made it the best out of all three Thor movies. It strikes us with a lightening bolt of fun, action and humour! That is why I am giving this movie a 8.3 on The Justin Scale Of Movies and putting this on my list of movies to see at the theatre right now. Well it is time to call it a wrap here for my latest review my friends. But don’t you worry I will be back next week with another review for you. Until next time keep that popcorn freshly popped and save me a good seat because I will see you at the movies.
