Good day my friends! It seems that we have reached the end of another month. And with the end of this month days away means that we only have 31days left in this year. With 2017 ending and 2018 on the horizon it makes you think about a lot of things and start to plan about what you want to do in the new year and look back on the year that has been. But for me I like to take a long look at myself, have I strived to achieve my goals, am I the same person I was last year, have I compromised my beliefs and what I stand for? That last one is particularly important to me! You see sometimes we lose our way and lose faith in this world with all the bad going on in it! It can be hard to keep those good beliefs alive in a world so cynical and corrupt. And sometimes we keep them and push on to fight the good fight. When we lose our way though life sometimes has a funny way of reminding us of the good person we once were and inspires us to change. Now this a lesson I have sen played out many times in many movies over the years. And it was no different in the latest one I just saw. The week we are reviewing the movie Roman J. Israel Esq. which stars two time academy award winner Denzel Washington( Fences) as Roman J. Israel Esq. and Colin Farrell( Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them) as George Pierce. So lets take a look at this crime/drama and see just who Roman J. Israel Esq. is!
Roman J. Israel Esq. (Washington) is a idealistic civil rights lawyer that has never tried a case in court you see that was his partners job. His was to research the case and get it ready for his partner to go and defend their client. But when his partner has a massive heart attack that puts him in a coma Roman soon finds himself without a job as his partners family decides to close the law office. A bit out of touch and not to great with people Roman has trouble finding work. But a lawyer named George Pierce who helped close down the law office Roman worked at see's how great Roman is with legal details and brings him on board at his large law firm to help with the lower profile cases in hopes that his new boss will loo at a landmark case on civil rights that he has been working on. Than one day while George was in litigation all day and the number two lawyer who Roman insulted at the firm was in charge Roman takes it upon himself to try and negotiate a lower sentence for a client of his in exchange for testifying against a man who shot a store clerk during a robbery that the client was involved in. He botches it and insults the city prosecutor trying to get the best deal for his client. This results in his client getting stabbed and killed in prison and making George furious at him. Roman while only trying to do the right thing always seems to get his honest opinions cause him trouble. So Roman decides that his way of thinking, living and all that he fought against were not attainable and whats the use to keep trying. He takes it upon himself with the information his dead client gave him about the whereabouts of the shooter of the store clerk anonymously calls in a tip to claim the reward for his capture. He starts to change his appearance buying new suits and shoes, an expensive new apartment, new hairstyle and only working to make a buck and not to help people. But when the man he got the reward for capturing becomes one of his clients and confronts him about it threatening to get back at him. Roman fears for his life and decides to change back and turn himself in for doing that trying to become that good person he once was again.
Well what did you think? It doesn't sound half bad right? And it was for the most part a decent movie my friends. Denzel Washington put in yet another great performance as he usually does. But the script seemed a little weak and the story moved along a little too slow for my liking. In a crime drama it really needs to grab you and while there were some memorable moments in this movie and a sense of pity for the character of Roman the movie just moved too slow and than finished really quickly. While the ending was pretty decent it just seemed this movie was missing something to make it better. Maybe a little more conflict or depth within the story. The humour was even a little too dry and not too many people in the theatre laughed at the subtle jokes. So that being said I am giving this movie Roman J. Israel Esq. a 6.2 on The Justin Scale Of Movies and putting it on my Flick-It list of movies to wait to see out on dvd. That's a wrap for me here my friends! As always keep that popcorn freshly popped and save me a good seat because I will see you at the movies!
