Remembering Dunkirk

Good day my friends! Another week is upon us and we have reached the hallway point of it. Hope you are all having a pretty great summer so far, making lots of memories. Memories are oh so very important to us they can be good ones that bring us joy, laughter, happiness and love. There are ones that are not so great that cause us pain, sadness and hurt, it is those ones that teach us lessons that make us stronger and to hopefully not make a big mistake like that again. But in all memories they all serve the purpose to remind us of where we have been and how far we have come in our lives. We need them in our lives because they show that we have truly lived. That is why I always liked history in school, the study of where we have been, who we are and where we came from. To hopefully learn the mistakes of the past and try and make sure we don't repeat them. For some there are memories so horrific that they are forever ingrained in their psyche. Most recently I read an article about a WW2 veteran who went and saw the movie that we are reviewing this week and he was so emotional after seeing this movie as he was at the battle of Dunkirk and said that the director of the movie Christopher Nolan got the events that transpired there perfectly. That he didn't glamorize war and how he hopes that this will inspire future generations to try and make a better world better so that a war like this would never happen again. So if you haven't guessed what movie I am talking about this week it is the new movie written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk. Which is his first historical drama, a bit of a change from his previous movies. This movie stars Tom Hardy(Mad Max:Fury Road), Kenneth Branagh(Valkyrie) and Mark Rylance(Bridge Of Spies). So let us take a trip back in time this week at the movies and witness a bit of history.

Soldiers from the British Empire and France were driven back by German forces in Dunkirk,France  in WW2 at the Battle Of France between May 26th-June 4th 1940. On the beaches of Dunkirk 400,000 British soldiers wait to be evacuated by sea. They face insurmountable odds as they are being bombed by German planes as they wait and the ships that are loaded with soldiers are being bombed or torpedoed by German U-Boats. Escape from the beaches of Dunkirk seems almost impossible. In desperation Britain sends out civilian boats across the English Channel to help evacuate the soldiers. The story is seen through the eyes of a soldier trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk trying relentlessly to find a way home, two RAF pilots sent to help fight off the German planes so the soldiers can be rescued and a group of civilians on their boat who were part of the evacuation fleet. As the tag line for the movie said " When 400,000cmen couldn't get home, home came for them!"

So you probably know what I think of this movie and you are right! This movie was perfectly done! It didn't have a whole lot of dialogue and used simple action to tell the story here and making it effective. It was perfectly crafted, director Christopher Nolan has made a true piece of art here re-telling this point in history. There are no words I can think of to perfectly describe how wonderful this movie was! It in fact did not glamorize war with many scenes of blood and guts in fact you never saw that. The story was more about survival and escape, the power of the human spirit to endure in a dark hour. What battle scenes there were did not need to show severed limbs or pools of blood to tell the story here. This in my opinion is one of his best movies yet! And I am not just saying that because I am a big fan of his movies. I am saying this as a reviewer and a movie fan in general. Not very often does a movie like this come along! It was perfectly written, directed and acted in telling of this point in history. This is a movie that I hope gets many Oscar nominations, as it most certainly deserves them! With that being said I am giving this movie a 9.2 on The Justin Scale Of Movies. It is put right on the top of my Pick-It list to see at the theatre as it was a change of what you usually see at the theatre over the summer months. Well that is a wrap for this latest movie review my friends. Until next week, remember to keep that popcorn freshly popped and save me a good seat and I will see you at the movies.
