Unwrapping The Mummy

Good day my friends! I"m back! Yes that's right it is time for my latest movie review. You know it seems like it was just yesterday that I started up this blog. Man that seems like a lifetime ago! A lot has happened between now and than. So much stuff has changed and some things have stayed the same. Memories have been made, tears have been cried, goals accomplished, some things have remained unfinished, friends and family have come and gone but in all that I am still here writing this blog for you even if I had taken some time away from here for a while I did come back! You know I heard it said best by a friend of mine today that this year is going by too fast and it seems to go by faster the older you get! But of all of this we know that even after we are gone we will still live on with the memories that we leave behind. That is what makes us immortal, the memories that we leave behind in our words and actions. Guess that is one of the reasons that I do this! This brings us to our latest movie review the first instalment of Universal Pictures Dark Universe series and re-boot  The Mummy starring Tom Cruise(Mission:Impossible). So let us see if The Mummy can scare us or if comes unwrapped.

While digging for some expansion tunnels for the underground in London a long lost burial tomb of crusader knights is found that houses in it an artifact that holds great power. It also holds the secret of a long lost burial chamber in Iraq of a forgotten Egyptian princess Ahmanet(Sofia Boutella) who killed her father and brother, made a pact with the Egyptian God of death Sett for dark powers to take the throne of Egypt that she felt was hers. Part of this deal was for her to use a sacred dagger and plunge it into a worthy vessel for the God to reside in. But before she could complete the ritual she was stopped and punished by being mummified alive and entombed far away from Egypt. It was since that time that she was buried in her crypt forgotten about for all eternity until a soldier/antiquities thief Nick Morton(Cruise) discovers it and removes her from her prison like tomb. Upon being freed from her prison beneath the desert Ahmanet choses Nick to be the new vessel for Sett even keeping him alive after she uses her powers to make the plane transporting her sarcophagus to England crash in in the English countryside killing everyone except Nick and archaeologist Jenny Halsey. But it was no accident that the plane crashed where she did as part of the sacred dagger was hidden there in a statue by the knights. The undead princesses power grows as she starts to get stronger. She finds the dagger and tries to use it on Nick to bring Sett into the world but notices a piece of it is missing, the jewel that was on top of it that sits entombed with the knights. She is captured by a secret organization lead by Dr.Henry Jekyll(Russell Crowe) that deals with the world of monsters and who also carries a dark secret of his own. The organization plans to use Nick to help defeat her and break the curse even if it means sacrificing his own life before Ahmanet plunges the world into darkness to reclaim what she believes to be hers.

Well it sounds good and in theory the plot seemed fairly decent and was an original idea for this latest re-boot of the horror classic. But there were some holes in the plot it seemed to me and could have used a little more detail. The movie just seemed to move to quickly without taking too much time to build the story properly. It had the potential though to be a better movie. To me it just seemed we were rushed through the story. Felt that Tom Cruise did alright in this movie bringing his usual charm and charisma. It did have some good points like the set up for future classic Hollywood monster movie icons to return one of them being Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde who we saw in this movie but can bet will get his own stand alone movie in the future. I liked the plot point of the mummy being a cursed Egyptian princess. But you fill in those plot holes and add a few scenes and this movie could be a lot better. So that being said I would have ave to give this movie a 6.3 on The Justin Scale Of Movies and sadly have to put it on the Flick-It pile of movies as it was okay but not great and it would be better off seeing it when it comes on dvd. Well that is a wrap here for this latest review! So until next time keep that popcorn freshly popped and I will see you next time at the movies.
