King Arthur:Legend Of the Sword The Classic Tale Re-Imagined

Good day friends! As a writer I know that the main thing need in every book and movie is a good story. Some stories are new, exciting and fresh making them interesting. They make our imaginations run wild and touch our hearts. Than there are the stories that are classic and passed down through the ages like Mary Shelly's Frankenstein or J.R.R Tolkiens Lord Of The Rings. These are the kind of stories that whether they are in print or on the big screen these stories have always been special to us all for one reason or another holding some meaning to us deep down. For me the stories that I always liked to read about were of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. The stories of chivalry, honour, excitement and betrayal made them the perfect stories and set my imagination ablaze!Back when I was in elementary school I remember checking that book out of the library about 10 times. Then when I got older I had always wanted to find a copy of that particular book but never could. As luck would have it I happened to find it at a garage sale. So when I heard that there was a new movie coming out about King Arthur I was excited to see it! So this weeks review is on the Guy Ritchie(Sherlock Homes) re-imagining of the classic tale called King Arthur:Legend Of The Sword which stars Charlie Hunnam of Sons Of Anarchy fame and Jude Law who has worked with Ritchie on both Sherlock Holmes movies. So let us go back to a time of legend to see if this re-imagining can compare to the classic stories that I liked as child.

After defeating the dark mage Mordred King Uther(Eric Bana) is betrayed and killed by his brother Vortigern(Jude Law)that had been practicing dark magic to gain more power. But before he can take the throne for himself completely he has to have the kings sword Excalibur given by the mage Merlin to King Uther. After killing the king the sword is encased in stone and can only be pulled out by the rightful heir to the throne Arthur who had been placed in boat and saved from being killed by his uncle. Arthur's boat floats all the way from Camelot to Londinium where he is found by some prostitutes and raised in a brothel and on the streets of the city. Than one day many years later fate comes calling as the water subsides revealing the sword in the stone meaning that the time for the prophecy of the rightful king to take back the throne has come. So Vortigern searches the country for all boys of a certain age to come try and pull the sword from the stone and to find the one that can so that he may kill him and take the sword for himself as well as complete control of the throne. Fate has Arthur found by the Kings soldiers and taken to Camelot where he pulls the sword from the stone. Having being knocked unconscious from the power of the sword Arthur is captured by the King and set to be executed. He is saved by a group of rebels and female mage. Now with them he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy as much as he doesn't want to! To take down his evil uncle and take his rightful place as the one true king!

Well that sounds like this would be quite the movie! What I can tell you is this nothing like the stories I read as a kid. Also I can tell you that this movie while it sounds good in the synopsis did have a few problems with it. Now maybe I was just over tired when I saw it yesterday but I found that the movie seemed to jump around too much on some plot points in order to speed us through the movie. The main characters were developed nicely but others seemed confusing with little to no development to them. Instead instead of using dialogue filled scenes to build up the plot and characters Ritchie instead chose to use a lot montage scenes filled with celtic music. While I liked the idea of the whole re-imaging and thought it had a great plot idea. The film seems rushed on key plot and character details and than seemed to lag in a few others all the while filling it with video game like 3D sword fight scenes that really hurt my eyes. In short this movie was okay, it could have done more to have less loud montages and the dizzying sword fight scenes and more story. A good movie doesn't need tons of special effects just a good story that flows nicely. An okay movie does these other things that I mentioned above. That is why I give this movie a 6.5 on the Justin Scale of movies which just puts it above mark as a pick-it film but a light picks it does have some entertainment value but not a rush right out and see this movie. Which in essence makes it a flick -it and I would wait to see it on a cheap Tuesday or when it comes out on dvd. That's a wrap here for me this week on this review but stay tuned and keep that popcorn fresh for next weeks review!
