Welcome Back! And Look What I Have Seen!

Yes I know by the title that I am welcoming myself back, but I hope you do too my faithful readers and friends that have continued to read my blog even when I take breaks such as I did. But sometimes you know it's good to take a little break for a while and get your bearings back. You see that is exactly what I have been doing these past two months. It was a much needed break as I felt I wasn't giving you quality reviews like I usually do. Everything looked the same, I couldn't find the words anymore and was just running through the same old routine. So I took a little time off to refresh but that doesn't mean I didn't see any movies. Oh no! In fact I had seen a few movies while I was away but not the usual amount you would think I do! To be honest I saw the following movies Deadpool, The Big Short, Concussion, Daddy's Home, The Revenant, Hail Caesar!, Eddie The Eagle and Spotlight. Now I am going to try and give you my honest opinion on all of these movies in due time but for now I will just try and give you which ones belong on the Pick-It list of movies to watch.

First on this list is the movie that won best picture at the Oscars this year the critically acclaimed motion picture Spotlight which starred Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Live Schreiber. This movie is based on the true story of how the Boston Globe 's Spotlight team investigated and uncovered a decades long cover-up of child molestation in the Catholic Church in Boston's Archdiocese that eventually opened up the flood gates about molestation in across the country and in other places in the world. This movie dealt with a very sensitive subject and while it might be disturbing to watch when you think about what happened. But this movie was well written and executed by those involved showing the respect to the victims and bringing light to this issue so it is not forgotten.  This movie is given a 8.5 on The Justin Scale of Movies.

The next is another Oscar nominee and winner for best adapted screenplay, The Big Short. This movie has plenty of star power with Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. This movie follows four denizens in the world of high finance that notice that the credit and housing bubble is on the verge of collapse in the mid-2000's. They decide to take on the big banks for their greed and bet against them. This movie was another one that was really well done, when you first watch it your like I don't know anything about high finance. But they have a comedic way of explaining it to you all the while documenting the events leading up to the crash and still keeping a human element to the story. This movie I give a 7.9 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

As we continue along our way the next pick is the movie that took home the Oscars for best director -Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, cinematography- Emmanuel Lubezki. But what this movie is now best known for is the role that finally won Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar for best actor after numerous defeats. That movie if you haven't guessed it is of course The Revenant. This movie follows a frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820's that must fight for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead my members of his own team. All the while looking for vengeance for not only that but for the murder of his son by one of the members of his team played by Tom Hardy. This movie had a great story and while it was long and did have some graphic violence which was a little hard to watch at parts. The movie was wonderfully acted and beautifully directed taking advantage of the environment it was filmed in. This movie is given a 8.2 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

Where were we? Oh yeah the next movie on my list in a year of strong movies and performances, this one being Concussion. This movie stars Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks and David Morse. Many have said that Will Smith was snubbed for his role in this movie which lead to the controversy about lack of diversity in the Oscars. Now I am not going to get into that too much here but I do believe that Will Smith did put in a performance worthy of a Oscar nomination. But I am not on the committee that does that I am just simple movie reviewer/caretaker who loves the movies. But I do believe there needs to be more diversity in the Oscars for all races. That being said this movie is about the true story of Dr.Bennet Omalu a brilliant forensic neuropathologist who discovered  CTE, a football-related brain trauma discovered in a pro player. He fights against the NFL to make the truth known. A well acted and written story on a subject that repetitive head trauma and its long term effects. This movie gets a 7.3 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

The next on this list is not an Oscar nominee as much as it's main character thinks it should be. This movie was ironically released on Valentines Day but was not what you expect to go and see with your sweetheart on that day. The movie I am talking about is of course Deadpool, the Marvel Comics anti-hero also known as the merc with the mouth. The movie Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J Miller and Ed Skrein. When former special forces operative mercenary Wade Wilson is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He undertakes a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers but also make him physically deformed. He adopts the alter ego Deadpool and uses his new powers and his dark and twisted sense of humour to hunt down the man who deformed him so that he can fix his deformity. This movie had a good story, was humorous, fun to watch and played well to Ryan Reynolds sarcastic sense of humour. He was in my opinion made to play the role of Deadpool. This movie gets a 8.4 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

Last but not least of my Picks is the heartwarming and feel good  movie based on the true story of Michael "Eddie" Edwards called Eddie The Eagle. This movie stars Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman and tells the story of an unlikely but yet courageous British ski-jumper who always dreamed of being in the Olympics and could never seem to find his sport and when just when he thinks he found it in downhill skiing he is cut from the Olympic team. He decides to instead compete as Great Britain's first ski jumper since 1929. But as he faces many obstacles including his own nation being against him, he finds help from a rebellious and charismatic coach Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making history at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. This movie was good from beginning to end , it had a great story which was heartwarming and moving and was wonderfully acted which leaves an impression in your mind. This movie gets a 7.7 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

Well now that my picks are done time for my Flicks of movies which I would not see in the theatre and wait till they come out on DVD if you wanted to see them.

The first is Will Ferrell's latest to come out which starred Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg  called Daddy's Home. This movie follows stepdad Brad Whitaker, a radio executive who always wanted children but could never have them so instead is trying his best to be a great stepdad. He does his best to tray and get them to love him and call him dad. But when their biological father Dusty returns to try and reclaim his family it's an all out battle to se who the better dad is. While this movie had promise and a good idea here it fell flat, it had a small amount of jokes that I found humorous and really just tried too hard to be funny but wasn't. The script I found was weak as well, the only thing that worked well was the chemistry between Ferrell and Wahlberg who worked together previously on The Other Guys. This movie gets a 6.2 on The Justin Scale Of Movies.

The next I thought would be pretty decent as well but was a little disappointed in as it had so much star power in it. That movie starred Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, and Channing Tatum. This movie follows the a day in the life of Eddie Mannix who is a Hollywood fixer for Capitol Pictures in the 1950's. He cleans up all sorts of problems for big names and the stars at the studio he works for and which takes him to the church confessional more often than he would like. But in the midst of dealing with all the problems that he is presented with at the studio a bigger problem occurs. The studios biggest star Baird Whitlock disappears right in the middle of finishing the big epic being filmed and it is discovered that he was kidnapped. Mannix must now deal with this instead of just trying to fix it. This movie is another one that had some promise but  seemed to jump around a lot leaving you a little confused at times. The story had promise but just seemed to lose me and I was paying attention. But I did like all the nostalgia of 1950's Hollywood that was portrayed in the movie. This movie gets a 6.7 on the Justin Scale Of Movies.
